Community Food Security VISTA Project
Building capacity to create self-reliant neighborhoods
Join our team in the Waterloo, Iowa metro area and Cedar Rapids Iowa to improve food security among vulnerable populations. The University of Northern Iowa Local Food Program (housed in the Center for Energy and Environmental Education), Feed Iowa First, People's Community Health Clinic, and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank are the leading entities collaborating to develop these initiatives and implement them.

As an AmeriCorps site, UNI CEEE mobilizes passionate AmeriCorps service members across various organizations to build capacity for a mobile produce stand for fresh veggies from local farms in several neighborhoods, strengthening volunteer capacity and community engagement, helping food banks purchase from local farms, and helping patients receive . You would learn about long term strategies towards community food security.

The Problem
Almost 19,000 individuals (14.3%) are food insecure in Black Hawk county; 5000 are children.

Our Solution

We train and support AmeriCorps service members to serve in local organizations actively working to improve access to healthy, nutritious foods in our communities.
Nearly 24,000 individuals (16%) are food insecure in Black Hawk county; 1 in 6 are children.
